So I noticed PvP has been picking up on popularity lately. There are so many players who are a challenge to take down if you don't have a great strategy. So here are a few tips I use.

-Use an axe. My fighting style is right and left clicking like crazy, Using a sword will slow your slicing when you block (right click). Additionally, blocking does not defend against a lot of damage. Axes are not a bad weapon of choice.
-Axes also degrade armour faster than swords. When you level up your axes (Hitting people
and animals with axes) will help your axe damage armour more than swords.

-Run in circles around your opponent and continually slash at them. This will basically make it
harder to hit you and make your dirty work more efficient.

Add different enchants on your weapon!
Obviously, make sure you have a decent level of sharpness on your sword/axe. I prefer using
knockback so I can snipe people off with my bow. Fire aspect is also good, to whittle away at
    others' health.

    Hotbar setup
I like to have a certain hotbar setup that is efficient for my fighting. My first slot is my damage sword (Sharpness 5, knockback 1, unbreaking3). My second is my status sword (Fire aspect, knockback, smite)
Third is bow (power 4) and fourth is food. After that, I mostly have assorted items, which sometimes
include golden apples, potions, or tools I regularly have when I go mining, etc.

Have fun enjoying these tips, and I hope to see you guys chopping some skulls! <3

All good PvP tips, an axe is MUCH better than a sword. The worst mistake I see is when people use a sharp 4 diamond sword instead of a sharp 5 diamond axe. A sword, being your classic weapon, swings slower, and has a block ability. The block is really used as more of an anti bow thing.

These are both myths, just because the display for the swing isn't as quick doesn't mean it actually is slower. You can hit quicker than your display shows.
Secondly, axes never have depleted armour quicker than swords. I've researched into it and done first hand testing. It comes from McMMO where the axes have a skill where they do 1 extra damage to armour, so it's not a vanilla feature :p

Also, the block ability on a sword actually does more than you'd think. It's a bad idea when you're needing out-strafe your opponent as the actual speed is more vital, yet the block has its place.

Fair bit of warning, the 'Smite' enchantment doesn't do extra damage to players, only to the undead. You're on about Sharpness :p

Oh right my friend Joseph gave me the sword. I use it for fire aspect and knock back... Don't mind the smite
