There was some commotion about Mojang being hacked and a bunch of accounts and their information (passwords) were posted for the world to see. Well, Mojang has brought to people's attention that they weren't hacked and that their databases are at full security. So... how were a bunch of accounts compromised?

Well it's a simple act of hacking called phishing. It's pronounced "fishing" and it's kinda like fishing. Untrustworthy people will "lure" you to a website that looks official and have you log in with your Minecraft information. After that, they "reel in" your account information and you can't tell that they did anything. And that is what happened with a bunch of people just recently; they were victims of phishing.

While on the Internet, you need to be careful of where you go and what your accessing. Anything can look official in website form, so you need to be cautious. The reason why people steal these accounts is because they can be used as currency since they were purchased for premium (when you bought Minecraft, you paid about $30). Be careful of who you trust, especially server websites. Use different passwords for server websites than your Minecraft one. Also, NEVER log onto a non-premium server. The server operator(s) can easily steal your information because there is no regular security (to let cracked Minecraft users play on the server).

Be careful with who you trust. Noble Craft is a trusted network, and we have security on both the servers and website. You have nothing to worry about with your NC website account and your Minecraft account while playing on the Noble Network.

Anyways, stay safe out there. If you were affected by this phishing incident, your account password was reset. Check your emails if you cannot log in to your account.

Phishing isn't hacking. It's social engineering.

Yeah you're correct on that one. I guess you can say it's an act of stealing.

This is both incorrect and correct.
If you're lured into giving someone your password in an IM or chatroom, there's nothing preventing that.
However, if they got you to go to a malicious website that either gave you some kind of virus or keylogger, that would be illegal. If they created a fake Minecraft login form, that is also illegal.
