A recent post by Shnikins about Letter of the Law and Spirit of the Law is so true. I have really found myself looking at the chat a little differently today and realizing that there has been a lot of strictness with the rules. I would hope that the staff would have an even more raised awareness of a player's actions after reading his post. ..... And then this happens: Derahd and Doodle were having some fun (with minecarts I'm assuming, since I only saw chat). They were either having a good time or something funny happened in their adventure and Derahd typed "lmao" in chat. (Laughing My *** Off) In my opinion, the word *** would be a bad word when used negatively to refer to/describe a person. However, in this context, he was laughing very hard and laughing his butt (***) off. He was not calling someone a name, he was just sharing with doodle (and everyone else in chat) that he was laughing pretty hard and having a good time. The incident below would have been a perfect time to teach players about the rules, since many players online were very confused, instead EVERYONE seems to have received a warning - even those asking questions. Players were asking questions of staff about lmao because they did not understand why Derahd received a warning. Softball tells them to stop saying it. The players complied but they were warned anyway. Softball tells them that they should have listened to her. Softball gave Derahd a warning. Derahd asked what the warning was for, because he did not understand. Softball told him to look at the screenshot. Doodle informed Derahd that it was because he said lmao. Doddle realized that he then said lmao in chat. Porkchop asked in disbelief "But your allowed to say lmao aren't?" Softball suggests that everyone stop saying it. 0.05 seconds later, hidden1nin asks what lmao means. Derahd then writes a nice apology Doodle receives a warning LittlePorkChop asks Did I really just recieve a warning? Softball says "I said not to say it, so next time ... listen. It seems that at least Derahd, Doodle and PorkChop were all warned for profanity. And probably hidden1nin was too. Is this what Noble-Craft has come down to? I really hope this post will help open a discussion and have these punishments reconsidered. ============================================================ See below for actual conversation with timestamps: [20:57:37] Player Derahd > did u escape into the town doodle lol [20:57:50] Player doodlemuki123 > well im glad i didnt do the whole course... Wow... I know this is unrelated but i once got a 1 hour mute for saying 'hiiiiiiiiii' i'd understand 15 minutes but shouldn't i get a warning before a 1 hour mute i am a fairly new player on this server so how was i supposed to know that wasn't allowed.
xfscraft You were muted over a month ago, but you were issued a warning on 5-10-2015 for Spam which was the reason you were muted two days later. And now to the nature of this thread saying any type of profanity is against the rules even if you are asking why you were issued a warning or mute for it, or even just asking what it means in chat. When a staff member says something just please abide by it and don't continue on the fact after the matter
Penguin, I think you are missing the point of this thread. The original post above clearly shows that the players listened to what Softball said when she asked them to stop using the word, yet she still gave them a warning. The timestamps on the chat conversation clearly show this. Her reasoning for the warning was "I said not to say it, so next time... listen.". It would be a fine warning if it really was profanity, however it was not. The players were clearly confused and were all wondering the same thing (there is a clue right there that a punishment may either be unjust to the player or not clearly understood by the community). I think the players had every right to question the decision since the word *** (as used in this context) is not a profane word and that means that saying "lmao" in chat should not be a punishable offense. I believe the vast majority of players would not take offense to the phrase "laughing my *** off". This is why the players were asking for clarification (which they never received) as to why lmao is profane and why it got Derahd a warning, which in turn got them a warning for trying to seek guidance and advice (of which they received neither). If staff would have tried to talk to the community (that was obviously confused) instead of completely dismissing their concerns and questions by wielding their almighty warning command, maybe staff could have learned something from the questions that would have come from the players -- and could have reconsidered their decision. (It's too bad there is not a noble-craft court, where some of these decisions could be used as teachable moments for staff) Even wiki's page on profanity backs me up on this. Wiki only considers the name-calling form of *** to be profanity. Also, wiki's page regarding the abbreviation LOL states that LMAO is a Different way to use LOL: https://simple.wikipedia.org/wiki/LOL This incident was not profanity and was actually showing that the player was having a great time on the server with another player. ... well, until this happened. The players listened to staff, yet all of them still received warnings. This kind of punishment falls under the same thing that Shnikins was just talking about in his earlier thread: (https://www.noble-craft.net/community/threads/lesson-in-common-sense.2835/)
Am I allowed to say *** referring to a donkey? Because the actuall word *** means donkey, even ask Shakespeare. So technically that term would be referring to laughing so hard that u fell off ur donkey. 0: oh no I fell off my donkey! How PROFANE. It's not really profane. And marsh why didn't us show the part where I said I was gonna eat a big piece of carp? But anyway. Right after I told derahd what he said wrong I said "oops I said it" so I believe all that deserves is a warning in main chat wich is what I got.... But then I got an actual warning to go with it. #law.vs.spirit
I personally do not think the word 'lmao' is not bad enough to receive a punishment to go on any player's record, knowing what it means and how it is used. I believe it should be punishable if a player used the word against another player(s). An example being, "You are an ***" and so on and so forth. I don't think Derahd deserved his mute or other players deserved it. Yes, they said the word although Sball requested them to stop, but they were asking questions about it. I will bring this to other staff's attention but I am only giving my opinion. Again, I do not think the punishments in this issue were well deserved.
Heya! We understand your concern with the rules and disdain with what's happened, and we'd like to make you aware that we are currently revising our rules and reworking where needed - we're going to try and make it much more lenient with chat offenses such as spam, caps & abbreviations. In the meantime; thread locked.
